Today, FC Barcelona defeated Real Valladolid 1-0 at the Jose Zorrilla stadium. Arturo Vidal was the man who scored the winning goal.
Vidal’s goal was setup by yet another wonderful Lionel Messi assist. With this assist, Messi notched up his 20th assist of the season. He thus equaled another FC Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez for the most assists in a single La Liga season.
Xavi had achieved the feat in FC Barcelona’s treble winning 2008-09 season.
Previously, Messi’s highest tally was 18 assists in the 2010-11, season, which incidentally was also the second highest single season assist tally until Messi overtook it a few days back.
Messi still has 2 more games to extend his tally, and hold the record ouright.
Lionel Messi is also on course to finish the season as both the highest numbers of goals and assists in La Liga, a feat that he has achieved before as well.
