The Wimbledon semi-final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal has been voted as the best match of 2018. With 36.4% of votes, the latest instalment of this storied rivalry is the runaway winner in our poll. The match was as close as they come, with the finest of margins separating the two great players. For the second year in a row, Nadal is on the wrong end of the best match of the year.
2) Rafael Nadal d. Dominic Thiem 0-6 6-4 7-5 6-7 7-6, US Open, Quarter-final
This late night epic at Flushing Meadows takes the no. 2 spot in our poll. Nadal fought back from being bagelled in the first set to beat Thiem in a fifth set tiebreak. This pulsating encounter polled 25% of all votes.
3) Juan Martin del Potro d. Roger Federer 6-4 6-7 7-6 Indian Wells, Final
With 11.4% of votes, the enthralling final at Indian Wells comes in at no. 3. Federer and del Potro have produced some real epics over the years, and this was another intriguing encounter. The topsy-turvy match ended with the big Argentine lifting his first Masters 1000 trophy.
4) Rafael Nadal d. Juan Martin del Potro 7-5 6-7 4-6 6-4 6-4 Wimbledon, QF
The Wimbledon quarter final between Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro received 8.6% of votes to finish at no. 4 on the list of best tennis matches of 2018. In a Wimbledon full of epic matches, this encounter lasted 4 hours and 48 minutes.
5) Novak Djokovic d. Roger Federer 7-6 5-7 7-6 Paris, SF
The semi-final between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer at the Paris Masters was a very high quality encounter. Federer would remain unbroken throughout the match, but Djokovic would be the one winning the tiebreak in the 1st and 3rd sets en route to the match. Polling 7.9% of the total, this match rounds off our top 5 men’s tennis matches of 2018.
